Periodic structures in integrated optics

Thin-film dielectric waveguides with a periodic refractive index, a periodic substrate, or periodic surface are studied. The field is determined from Maxwell's equations using Floquet's theorem. The Brillouin diagram and the interaction regions are investigated. The bandwidth and the attenuation coefficients of the interaction regions are given as a function of the optical wavelength. A number ...

Transmission Properties of the Periodic Structures Based on Graphene Nonlinear Optical Conductivity in a Terahertz Field

By developing the terahertz (THz) technology, in addition to generators and detectors of THz waves, the existence of some tools such as modulators and filters are needed. THz filters are important tools for various applications in the field of chemical and biological sensors. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of the graphene have attracted lots of attention. In fact graphene exhibits vari...

Pattern-integrated interference lithography: single-exposure fabrication of photonic-crystal structures.

Multibeam interference represents an approach for producing one-, two-, and three-dimensional periodic optical-intensity distributions with submicrometer features and periodicities. Accordingly, interference lithography (IL) has been used in a wide variety of applications, typically requiring additional lithographic steps to modify the periodic interference pattern and create integrated functio...

Nondestructive analysis of coated periodic nanostructures from optical data.

Optical data are essential for the accurate nondestructive determination of profiles of periodic structures in integrated-circuit technology. In rigorous coupled-wave analysis, the sample is generally modeled as layers consisting of a single material and the ambient. We extend present capabilities to the analysis of structures with overlayers and demonstrate our approach by determining quantita...

Time-domain analysis of periodic anisotropic media at oblique incidence: an efficient FDTD implementation.

We describe an efficient implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method as applied to lightwave propagation through periodic media with arbitrary anisotropy (birefringence). A permittivity tensor with non-diagonal elements is successfully integrated here with periodic boundary conditions, bounded computation space, and the split-field update technique. This enables modeling o...
